demon slayer: kimetsu no yaiba
set in taisho era japan, in this world man-eating demons exist alongside demon slayers, with the goal to rid of all demons for good.
the kamado family are a family of coal burners, and one day the oldest son, tanjiro, leaves to sell coal to the local village. upon his return, he discovers that his entire family has been murdered, except for his little sister nezuko who has now been turned into a demon.
obviously, everyone already knows about demon slayer and its anime. if you're fully caught up on the anime, i highly recommend reading through the full manga. and if you haven't ever consumed demon slayer content before, i highly recommend the entire series, both anime and manga!!
i absolutely adore this series with all my heart. i am typically not a fan of shonen (shoujo fan), but something about demon slayer really pulled me in. from the easy to understand, yet detailed worldbuilding, to the unique characters, then back to the deep connections of what it means to have a sibling, it's so intriguing. demon slayer also doesn't have much fan service, which i usually am warded away from. when it does exist, it's typically short lived and silly, still allowing the character it happens to to still have motivations and agency.
regarding siblings in this story: as someone who has older sisters and is incredibly close to my sisters, i felt such a strong connection to demon slayer. first of all: ITS NOT WEIRD ABOUT SIBLINGS!!! (isnt that so sad i have to say that). the relationship between tanjiro and nezuko especially is heartwarming and heartbreaking, knowing the two would do absolutely anything for the other. they remind me of my sister and i, so it makes the story even more compelling for me. other siblings appear frequently in the series as well, showing a variety of different dynamics and roles that siblings play for one another. i'm a huge sucker for stuff like that, so demon slayer definitely hit the mark for me.
the story itself is easy and simple to follow: find a way to get rid of all demons and turn nezuko back to human. the different arcs within the series explore how the characters reach that point, and who helps them.
